To start our family trip this year leaving the Sunshine Coast we headed northwest chasing warmer weather and some good adventures. Up through Emerald and Mt Isa we crossed the border into Northern Territory. A night at Barkley homestead before turning north on route to the much antisipated Lorella Springs Station, with an extra few 100kms in tracking down the last of the diesel along the way we headed into the Station after dark where Nick meet us and directed us to the acres of level ground to set up.
The first day we decided to head out exploring the million acre property ended up at Nudies Hot Spring a great little warm spring feed swimming hole surrounded by amazing bush and rocky out crop, and many black cockies over head. No-one else in sight we all had a great time swimming including our 6 week old son's first ever swim. Lots more exploring in the afternoon meant we were all ready for another swim in one of the many hot springs on the property, except this one is right at the door step of the bar.
The following days we ventured out to Rosie's fishing camp to try our hand at fishing, we saw shovel nose sharks basking in the shallows mud craps walking along the river edges and a few small sharks swimming right up to the waters edge. The kids loved it.
We climbed the mountains to explore the caves filled with artwork, dragon flys and micro bats.
But our favourite swimming hole was Nanny's Retreat a small hike off the dusty track threw amazing bushland following the water until you reach the amazing rock pools with deep clear flowing water that cuts threw the rocks. The kids loved swimming between the two large pools and did not want to leave.
We found the staff always helpful and the facilities spot on, even having to start a fire to heat the shower water in the donkey was enjoyable and a good experience for all.
All in all we loved our time at Lorella Springs Station and can not wait to be able to get up there again.
