Scott & Livia Palmer’s Lotus Off Limits

We had only recently purchased a brand new 22’6″ semi off road caravan which we both loved it soon became evident that it didn’t suit our requirements as far as clearance under the van. We therefore had to make the decision to go to a full off road van.

Our search began at the Penrith Caravans and Camping show in September 2014 where we found a van

that ticked all of the boxes, a 22’6″ Lotus Off Limits. We immediately loved the colour scheme, the layout and

it had adequate out door storage for our use which was high on our list as many large vans seemed to lack outdoor

storage area. We particularly like the fact that it had a huge club lounge which we preferred and this could easily be

converted into a bed or day bed/lounge simply by lowering the table and adding the extra cushion which we purchased.

Another great feature of the vans layout is the seperate lounge and bedroom areas as it is nicely appointed with a middle bathroom which divides the 2 areas. This is a bonus for anyone travelling full time as it allows for space and privacy and allows each area to be used independently without disturbing others. Whilst the bathroom is sacrificed in order to accomodate the club lounge we did not feel that this was an issue and still find the bathroom very functional. In fact it does have a very generous sized shower in comparison to other brands.

The price tag of the Off Limits was over our budget and we knew that this was quite possibly going to be the last van we buy, so if we were going to make the decision to purchase it we needed to do as much research as we could. We felt a great way to do this would be to speak to people who actually owned one so we joined the Lotus fb groups and contacted a few of the members who had the Off Limits. Each gave rave reviews on them which was very reassuring. This also enabled us to evaluate the the overall satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) of Lotus owners in general in regards to the service they have received from the manufacturer. An overwhelming majority were satisfied so that was very reassuring.

Whilst we loved the van we didn’t sign up immediately. We spent the next 12 months attending every caravan and camping show we could, researching and comparing brand after brand and we still could not find anything we liked better. We looked at so many brands checking quality and workmanship and felt qualified enough after so much research to determine that the Off Limits was not only the style we were after but left the quality of some other brands for dead.

At the next Penrith show in Sept 2015 we decided to go ahead and order our dream van with a promise from the dealership for a pre-Christmas delivery.

Inverter, slide out BBQ (which we chose not to have as we felt they waste a lot of storage space), 2 x 120a/h batteries,

2 x 90 litre water tanks, built in water filter, Dometic front load washing machine, 2 x sirocco fans, Nova Kool compressor fridge, Fusion sound System & subwoofer (although we exchanged the Subwoofer for the Truma gas heater), Fan-Tastic Vent, stone guard, 2 x Jerry can holders

With so many standard inclusions there really wasn’t too many extras we had to add. Some of the upgrades we purchased were Cruise Master airbag suspension, second spare wheel, upgraded from 1000w to 2000w inverter, an extra sirocco fan (3 in total), grey water tank, cushion for the table to convert club lounge to a bed, 2 extra power points and a Truma gas heater.

Standard inclusions were 3 x 150 w solar panels, 2 x 32 inch TV’s, full queen size pillow top mattress, 1000w

We picked up our van on the 31st December 2015 after a delay of approx 2 weeks and to say that we have been blessed and so spoilt is an under statement. We have loved the van since day one and whilst there were a number of small teething problems they were rectified in due course without any dramas. We did fix a few of them ourselves with permission from the dealership due to our location and inability to get down to them.

One of the best decisions we had made was to upgrade the suspension. The airbags allow us to easily level the van on

most uneven sites with the flick of a switch. We have not had to use the levellers since we have had it and therefore makes set up a breeze.

We have now had our van for 12 months and use it on regular basis. Since the initial teething problems we have not had any other problems in that time other than having to replace our batteries just recently (outside of warranty). We determined that the batteries provided were not the best quality and we have since replaced them with a much better brand and quality.

There is nothing we would change 12 months down the track and love everything about it. The quality of the interior has proven to be first class and after spending 6 weeks away in it recently we have found the layout to be a real winner.
