Media Release: 12 October 2017
Consumers and industry applaud Caravan Trade Industry Association of Victoria and Everything Caravan & Camping initiative of FREE Safety Inspections at Melbourne Leisurefest!
The Caravan Trade Industry Association of Victoria and Everything Caravan & Camping in partnership with Victoria Police, Vic Roads, RVeethereyet, Energy Safe Victoria, Victorian Building Authority and industry businesses; Advantage Caravan Repairs, Caravan Electrical Solutions, Epsom Palms Caravan World, Northern RV Services and Swift Caravan Services conducted ‘Free Safety Inspections’ for consumers on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 October at Melbourne Leisurefest. These inspection days were implemented as a part of the Associations strategy to better educate the industry through its National Caravan Industry Training College and to provide consumers with a vehicle check to better educate them and advise them of potential safety issues.
Mr Rob Lucas, CEO, Caravan Industry Association of Victoria (CIA VIC) stated, ‘We were extremely pleased with how our inaugural free safety inspection days progressed and the valuable partnerships we have established for this program. The promotion and assistance provided by Matt Sutton and his team from Everything Caravan and Camping – Australia’s largest Facebook group dedicated to caravanning was invaluable’.
‘Within 24 hours of jointly launching the call for registrations to participate in the two-day free safety inspection days we were fully booked and within a week we had a waiting list of over 30 consumers. This demonstrates the need for professional education for consumers regarding their recreational vehicles.’
‘As part of the Association’s strategy to better educate the industry and consumers through our National Caravan Industry Training College, which is continuing to go from strength to strength within the industry – our next stage of focus is consumer education. We hope that by coordinating these FREE safety inspection days it will be the first step towards clearer and consistent consumer messaging from our industry,’ commented Rob Lucas.
Over the two-days there were 20 participants that had full inspections completed being; two motorhomes, thirteen caravans, four pop-top caravans and one tent / camper trailer along with 38 applications received. Some comments received by participants were:
- ‘The candid comments, factual information and no crap advice was the best I’ve had in 40 years of caravanning.’ – Hayward Walton
- ‘So much information given to us and information that we need to know about being safe and legal on the road. Thank you so very much.’ – Marcelle and Peter Kleeven
- ‘I applaud this initiative and hope these inspections and the non-judgemental advice given will become more frequent and open to all caravanners.’ – Ross Brooks
- ‘I think it’s very important to educate the public on weights, safety and towing practices as well as safety like electrical and gas. Fantastic initiative!’- Damien Wines.
Participants were also surveyed following the event with all participants advising that they were very satisfied with the inspections and they would recommend the Caravan Safety
Inspection Program to others highlighting the value and service the customers received from all parties.
‘Of the 38 applications received it was exciting to see representation from all across Victoria with 89% residing in metropolitan Melbourne and 11% living in regional Victoria. With the success of this initiative the Caravan Industry Association of Victoria in partnership with Everything Caravan & Camping are looking to roll out this program across the state at strategic locations in 2018’, Rob Lucas stated.
The days were structured to inspect one caravan every 30 minutes to ensure all four (4) stages of inspection were completed. The four stages were:
Stage 1: Weights and Towing Set up Inspection;
Stage 2: Plumbing & Gas Inspection;
Stage 3: Electrical Inspection; and
Stage 4: Caravan Inspection.
